Избыток остаётся в пределах самого вещества. Нехватка, порождённая запретом, выходит за его пределы — и калечит сильнее.

Запрет на анашу не убрал потребность. Он вбил в неё табак. Человек тянулся к одному — и получил никотиновый крюк, которого без запрета не существовало бы. Мало того: дефицит выработал технику — глубокую затяжку с задержкой, чтобы выжать максимум из грамма. Эта техника жжёт лёгкие. Там, где каннабис доступен, его курят небрежно, без этой отчаянной экономии дыхания. Вред создан не веществом. Вред создан его отсутствием.

Горбатый сухой закон убрал водку с прилавков. Народ перешёл на денатурат. Государство, спасавшее от яда, отравило надёжнее яда — без контроля качества, без культуры, без выхода. Смертность от отравлений выросла именно тогда, когда алкоголь официально «победили».

Запрет абортов не останавливал нежеланную беременность. Он загонял её разрешение в подполье — к шарлатанам, спицам, сепсису. Женщины умирали не от аборта. Они умирали от условий, в которые их загнал запрет. Снова: вред создаётся не действием. Вред создаётся его вытеснением.

Это не парадокс и не случайность. Это механизм: запрет не уничтожает потребность — он загоняет её в зону максимального риска. Суррогат всегда опаснее оригинала. Адаптация к дефициту всегда уродливее самого дефицита.

Избыток разлагает личность. Нехватка калечит.

Scarcity Maims

Too much ruins you from the inside. Scarcity — especially the kind created by prohibition — does something worse: it pushes need beyond the thing itself and into a harsher form.

Ban hash, and the need does not disappear. It gets rerouted through tobacco. Someone reaches for one thing and ends up with a nicotine habit they would never have had otherwise. Scarcity does not just replace the object; it deforms the way it is used. It teaches people to take deep, punishing hits and hold them in, trying to wring the maximum out of almost nothing. Where cannabis is available, people smoke casually, without this desperate economy of breath. The damage is not caused by the substance. It is caused by its absence.

The same thing happened under Gorbachev’s dry law. Vodka vanished from the shelves, and people turned to denatured alcohol and other industrial substitutes. The state set out to save people from poison and ended up delivering something cruder, dirtier, and deadlier: no standards, no control, no culture, no way out. Poisoning deaths rose at the exact moment alcohol had supposedly been defeated.

Banning abortion did not stop unwanted pregnancy. It drove its resolution underground — to quacks, knitting needles, sepsis. Women did not die from abortion. They died from the conditions prohibition forced them into. Again: the damage is not caused by the act. It is caused by its expulsion.

There is nothing paradoxical about this. It is a mechanism: prohibition does not destroy need — it drives it into the zone of maximum risk. The substitute is always more dangerous than the original. The adaptations forced by scarcity are always uglier than scarcity itself.
