Ахиллес и черепаха
Монах спросил:
— Ахиллес не бежит и не стоит. Что это значит?
Мастер сказал:
— Он уже миновал твой вопрос.
Монах сказал:
— Каждый шаг оставляет след: ещё не отпечатался, а уже исчез. Где движение?
Мастер сказал:
— Принеси мне этот след.
Монах сказал:
— Не могу.
Мастер сказал:
— Если не можешь принести остановку, зачем складываешь движение из остановок?
Монах сказал:
— Разве движение не есть сумма остановок?
Мастер сказал:
— Остановка — это шрам, который остаётся, когда движение теряет себя в точке.
Монах указал и сказал:
— Здесь.
Мастер сказал:
— К тому времени как ты указал, это уже не здесь.
Монах сказал:
— Сейчас.
Мастер сказал:
— К тому времени как ты это сказал, оно уже состарилось.
Монах сказал:
— Учёные требуют движущееся, место и прохождение.
Мастер сказал:
— Пока они требуют, место уже сместилось, а движущееся ещё не явилось.
Монах сказал:
— Как сидеть в дзадзэн?
Мастер сказал:
— Сиди.
Монах сел.
Мастер сказал:
— Слушай тихий шелест внутри неподвижности.
Монах сказал:
— Сколько остановок нужно, чтобы увидеть, что остановиться нельзя?
Мастер сказал:
— Сколько ещё раз ты спросишь?
Монах сказал:
— Черепаха всё ещё впереди?
Мастер сказал:
— Она идёт по другой стороне ленты.
Монах сказал:
— Сколько поворотов нужно, чтобы увидеть, что другой стороны нет?
Мастер сказал:
— Ещё один вопрос.
Монах сказал:
— Остаток движения — это и есть мой вопрос о движении?
Мастер сказал:
— Это тот, кто спрашивает.
Монах сказал:
— Тогда кто кого догоняет?
Мастер сказал:
— Встань.
Монах встал.
Мастер сказал:
— Шагни.
Монах шагнул.
Мастер сказал:
— Поздно. Тот, кто считает шаги, уже проиграл.
Молчание.
Мастер сказал:
— Сделай ещё шаг.

僧問う、
「アキレウスは走らず、また止まらず。如何。」
師云く、
「すでに汝が問を過ぐ。」
僧云く、
「歩々に跡あり。未だ成らずして已に滅す。動、何れの処にか在る。」
師云く、
「その跡を将ち来たれ。」
僧云く、
「将ち来たること得ず。」
師云く、
「然らば何ぞ停を聚めて動と作す。」
僧云く、
「動は停の積みに非ずや。」
師云く、
「停は動の痕なり。動、点に堕して己を失う。」
僧、指して云く、
「此処。」
師云く、
「指すとき、すでに彼処。」
僧云く、
「今。」
師云く、
「言うとき、すでに旧し。」
僧云く、
「学人、動く者と動く処とを求む。」
師云く、
「求むるうちに処は移り、人は現ぜず。」
僧云く、
「坐禅は如何。」
師云く、
「坐せ。」
僧、坐す。
師云く、
「静の中の微響を聴け。」
僧云く、
「幾たび停まれば停まること能わずと知らん。」
師云く、
「なお幾たび問わん。」
僧云く、
「亀はなお前に在るや。」
師云く、
「帯の裏を行く。」
僧云く、
「幾たび転ぜば裏なきことを見ん。」
師云く、
「さらに一問。」
僧云く、
「動の余りはこの問いに非ずや。」
師云く、
「問う者、これなり。」
僧云く、
「誰か誰に及ぶ。」
師云く、
「立て。」
僧、立つ。
師云く、
「行け。」
僧、一歩行ず。
師云く、
「遅し。数うる者はすでに後る。」
良久。
師云く、
「また一歩。」
Achilles and the Tortoise
A monk asked, “Achilles neither runs nor stands still. What is this?”
The master said, “He has already passed your question.”
The monk said, “Each step leaves a trace: not yet impressed, already gone. Where is motion?”
The master said, “Bring me the trace.”
The monk said, “I cannot.”
The master said, “If you cannot bring me a stop, why make motion out of stops?”
The monk said, “Is motion not the sum of stops?”
The master said, “A stop is the scar left when motion loses itself in a point.”
The monk pointed and said, “Here.”
The master said, “By the time you point, it is already elsewhere.”
The monk said, “Now.”
The master said, “By the time you say it, it has aged.”
The monk said, “The learned demand the mover, the place, and the passage.”
The master said, “While they demand, the place has shifted and the mover has not appeared.”
The monk said, “How should one sit in zazen?”
The master said, “Sit.”
The monk sat.
The master said, “Listen to the faint rustling within stillness.”
The monk said, “How many stops before one sees that one cannot stop?”
The master said, “How many more times will you ask?”
The monk said, “Is the tortoise still ahead?”
The master said, “It walks on the other side of the ribbon.”
The monk said, “How many turns before one sees there is no other side?”
The master said, “One more question.”
The monk said, “Is the residue of motion this very question?”
The master said, “It is the one who asks.”
The monk said, “Then who catches whom?”
The master said, “Stand.”
The monk stood.
The master said, “Step.”
The monk stepped.
The master said, “Too late. The one who counts steps has already lost.”
Silence.
The master said, “Take another step.”
阿基里斯與龜
僧問：「阿基里斯不行不住，如何？」
師曰：「早過你問處。」
僧曰：「步步有跡，未成即滅。動在何處？」
師曰：「將跡來看。」
僧曰：「將不來。」
師曰：「將不來，何用住相湊作動相？」
僧曰：「動不是眾住和合麼？」
師曰：「住，是動失身於點時留下的疤。」
僧指曰：「這裡。」
師曰：「才指，已錯。」
僧曰：「現在。」
師曰：「才說，已老。」
僧曰：「學人要求動者、動處、動相。」
師曰：「你求時，處已遷，者未現。」
僧曰：「坐禪時如何？」
師曰：「坐。」
僧坐。
師曰：「聽靜中碎響。」
僧曰：「幾番停住，方知不可停？」
師曰：「你還待問幾番？」
僧曰：「龜還在前麼？」
師曰：「在帶子那邊行。」
僧曰：「幾番翻轉，方知無那邊？」
師曰：「更問一句。」
僧曰：「動之餘痕，莫非我此問乎？」
師曰：「正是你。」
僧曰：「畢竟誰及誰？」
師曰：「起。」
僧起。
師曰：「行一步。」
僧行一步。
師曰：「遲了。數步者先失。」
良久。
師曰：「更行一步。」

The master said, “It walks on the other side of the ribbon.”
The monk said, “How many turns before there is no other side?”
The master said, “One more question.”
The monk said, “Is the residue of motion this question?”
The master said, “It is the one who asks.”
The monk said, “Then who catches whom?”
The master said, “Stand.”
The monk stood.
The master said, “Step.”
The monk stepped.
