Мат как śūnyatā языка

Russian mat as the śūnyatā of language

In what follows, mat names a distinct Russian register built from a tightly interwoven cluster of sexual and bodily roots — a stratum of language with its own force, plasticity, and cultural charge.

Mat is not the shadow of language, but one of the forms of its primordial openness. It belongs neither to the “high” nor to the “low” register, because it comes before that division itself. Its force lies not in fixed meaning, but in the power to generate meaning: in that living emptiness from which both insult and prayer can arise. Its roots do not merely name; they let speech happen again, each time anew. Mat does not violate taboo — it comes before it.

When the speaker is seized by affect, mat becomes a weapon. When the speaker becomes aware of speech as the movement of emptiness, mat becomes a mirror: anything may resound through it, yet nothing is finally fixed there. Where it is born of presence, it remains speech; where it bursts out as an automatic reaction, it no longer opens — it merely discharges.

So the question is not mat itself, but the way one dwells in it. Clumsiness turns it into a symptom of duality; clarity releases within it a pre-moral, pre-hierarchical energy of language.

At the root of this energy lies a simple and exact triad: the masculine, the feminine, and the act of their union. Russian mat is not a repertoire of dirty words, but a genealogical morphology of language in which speech retains the memory of an originary scene of difference and joining. From this ground everything else unfolds: difference is given together with relation from the very beginning. The Dao of language here is not a metaphor, but a trace in the very structure of speech.

Mat expresses not “corporeality,” but a minimal ontology of difference,
where the body is only its most radically given form,
where difference can no longer be hidden behind abstractions,
where it stands forth as it is — without cover, without justification,
and where language, precisely there, speaks for the first time in earnest.

In this sense, mat can be understood not as the fall of speech, but as a reminder of its unowned and unfixed nature. It is neither pure nor impure — it simply shows that language runs deeper than its prohibitions.

And yes, mat too is a path. Not a “low” one, but an originary one.

Mat is not a “lower” language, but one of the ways emptiness speaks through a human being.

(When language ceases to be ashamed of itself, speech can finally begin.)
